Religion Teacher Combines Technology and Tradition to Celebrate Advent

Sr. Mary Therese Perez, FSHA’s freshmen religion teacher, wanted to celebrate the season of Advent with her students, while also inviting the larger school community to engage in the richness of the season. Using the technology of QR codes and Busted Halo’s online Advent Surprise Calendar, she created an interactive Advent calendar that celebrates this traditional season of preparing for Jesus’ arrival.

A QR code, short for quick response, is a bar code that can store information, such as website URLs and plain text. They can be read using any of the many free QR code readers available for smart phones and tablets.

Each day, students and teachers can scan the new QR code for surprise reflections, videos, songs, and challenges related to Advent themes.

For example, the QR code for Sunday, Dec. 7 linked to “The Journey of Advent Through Teenage Eyes,” a blog of Advent reflections written by and for teenagers.

If you haven’t already, please visit the Advent calendar in the freshman halllway and scan a code!
