Honors Scientific Research Teacher At FSHA Since 2014
What is your role at FSHA?
I teach Honors Scientific Research, the capstone class for seniors interested in STEM fields. The class gives students the chance to do a "summer research internship" during the school year by repurposing the Biology classroom into an undergraduate-level Biology research lab.
What do your students call you?
What made you want to work at FSHA?
I was approached by the Science Department to design and develop a course that would build skills and confidence for talented young women interested in pursuing STEM fields after high school. It's based on my chemistry research and science policy experiences at Caltech and beyond. I really enjoy the Science Department faculty and their focus on inquiry-based learning. As a believing Christian, I value the religious education students here receive and the focus on living a life of Faith, Integrity and Truth.
What has been your proudest professional accomplishment?
PhD in Chemistry from Caltech
What has been your favorite teaching moment at FSHA?
Seeing my students realize the importance of humility in seeking truth and understand that "it's okay if I don't have all of the answers or know it all.”
What most excites you about your work here on the Hill?
Doing science with my students.
What is FSHA's best kept secret?
That the nighttime security guard Linda keeps her walkie-talkie radio volume a little bit lower when she is patrolling at night where the Sisters live, so calls to her radio don't awaken them. Such a nice lady!
What do you love about the all-girls environment at FSHA?
That I can talk candidly with the students about ways to contribute to the world through professional and personal pursuits. I can address specific skills that will help young women define their game and play it well.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
Crane Field's view of the mountains
When not in the classroom/office, where can you be found?
Out and about in the La Canada community, whether it be for my family, church volunteer work, Girl Scouts, or a mountain-bike ride.
What's your favorite place in the world?
Any forests with trails for hiking and biking
What are you surprisingly good at?
Remembering miscellaneous stuff about people
Who has made the biggest impact on your life?
My husband Dave
What book, movie, work of art, piece of music, etc. can you not imagine life without?
What did you want to be when you grew up (at age 12)?
