Residential Life: September Update

What a whirlwind it has been welcoming our residents back into the halls and on to the Hill, the school with the best view anywhere!  Move in day in August brought our girls’ energy, smiles, and hugs as they welcomed one another after 18 months apart! 
 
Our Residential Life Leadership Council has demonstrated strong leadership and initiative as they begin to work with their hallmates in developing community and norms for communal living. Leadership lessons are taught alongside the planning of events and teambuilders.
Our summer birthday bash was an enjoyable event on the lawn as we celebrated all summer birthdays with a BBQ, cake, ice cream, and a spirited water balloon war which melded into a full on wet and wild water extravaganza! Our birthday girls were sung to in many languages and each received a special birthday gift. We hold a fun themed birthday bash  each  month.

We have also commenced our cultural evenings in which we celebrate our residents’ home cultures with a special menu and program. We celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival/Mooncake Festival on September 21 on our terrace with a view of the moon. Of course, many mooncakes were consumed!  Our next special dinners will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and Canadian Thanksgiving.

Our newly-written Residential Life Curriculum has included teaching modules on a variety of topics, from cooking and baking to self-defense class to study skills and time management. Our curricular modules are offered in the evenings and weekends.

We have a fun and spirited way of encouraging the girls to do the right thing and keep on top of their commitments. Each hall has affinity t-shirts and hall competitions and points are given for winning trivia nights, having the cleanest rooms, getting to breakfast on time, and more!

Our girls enjoy relaxing weekends as a time to journey with friends and staff to local LA sites such as Seal Beach, Long Beach, and other popular destinations and events in the local LA area. Girls may sign up for weekend activities ranging from service to Broadway plays to shopping to movies to museums to hiking, and more!  Our goal is for our girls to learn about and explore all that our region has to offer.
