Residential Life: January & February Update 2022

As we celebrate Lunar New Year in our school community, we reflect on the goodness and spirit of our entire school family. Our winter fun began with a joyous Christmas season replete with Secret Santa fun and a beautiful dinner and gift exchange in the lounge. We explored local holiday fun and neighborhood Christmas lights, offered ice skating trips and more, and enjoyed our beautiful hall decorations and cozy nights in under our Christmas tree. Ms Singer led us through a lovely Hannukah dinner and games. Perhaps the highlight of Christmas on the Hill was being serenaded with Christmas carols by the Sisters!
January has come and gone in a flash! The girls enjoyed a wide range of weekend experiences to places such as Joshua Tree in the desert, Descanso Gardens, hiking, an LA Walking tour, the Huntington Gardens, the Getty Villa, and more. We have been exploring our creative sides with unique hall art projects, such as our painter’s tape wall art, and a Paint and Sip oil painting night with Italian flavored soda. We launched our own Escape Room kit, and will soon be unpacking and playing with our new Laser Tag toys!
 
Our winter birthday girls, Sisters and staff enjoyed a yummy winter themed birthday party and cool ice cream cakes. Every birthday person receives a “birthday bag” of their favorite sweets and a gift card.

Lunar New Year is a res life favorite, and our halls are festooned with lanterns and decorations. We hand made 200 dumplings in preparation for our Lunar New Year party and beautiful dinner replete with music, songs, and poetry readings, and of course, lucky red envelopes, or hongbao, distributed to the girls. A group of students enjoyed the Lunar New Year celebration at the Huntington Gardens.
 
We welcomed our very first Round Square exchange student, Catalina, from Markham College in Lima, Peru. Catalina is taking junior level classes and especially enjoys ballet dancing. She is enjoying southern California very much and will stay with us on the Hill through February.
 
From a curricular perspective we did some New Year’s grounding at our January prayer service, and will focus on ethical decision making and healthy relationships in our upcoming intentional programs. Our res life leaders started their work on active listening and conflict resolution. We are crafting the goals and objectives in our outdoor program curriculum and are organizing two camping trips in the spring to practice outdoor skills.

Our res life girls are well-integrated into the community as active participants in leadership roles, co-curriculars, and athletics. They are very serious about their studies and work diligently in the evenings on homework. This is a wonderful group. 

We also said a fond farewell to long time dorm mom, Anoosh, and welcomed Ms. Cathy Powell from Michigan to our residential life faculty team. Ms Tennity moved off campus, but remains on the Hill as one of our science teachers. 

As always, we welcome staff and student participation in all of our events!
