Sister Teresa Maya '85

Flintridge Sacred Heart graduate, Sister Teresa Maya was elected president of the Leadership Conference of Religious Women.
In August 2016 Flintridge Sacred Heart graduate, Sister Teresa Maya was elected president of the Leadership Conference of Religious Women (LCWR). Founded in 1936, the LCWR is a national leadership organization of women’s religious congregations in the United States. Their annual gathering is intended to support leadership as they collaboratively work to further the mission of Christ in today’s world. Each year they pray together and celebrate, listen, reflect and network. Together, they seek to alleviate the abuse of immigrants, end human trafficking, work for solutions to climate change and improve health care.

Sister Teresa was educated by the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose in Mexico and here on the Hill. Following her graduation from FSHA, she received a B.A. from Yale University, an M.A. from the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley and a Ph.D. at El Colegio de Mexico in Mexico City. Niggling in the back of her mind during her time at Yale and GTU was an awareness of God’s calling her to religious life. That search would lead her to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, whose Motherhouse is in San Antonio. A member of the Congregation for 20 years, she was elected to their leadership team in 2008 and elected Congregational leader in 2014.

Sister Teresa, passionate about education, has served as teacher, history professor and administrator. She is also passionate for the formation of ministries for Hispanic/Latinas in the United States. She often shares, “I think Latina Sisters, whether they are born in the U.S. or foreign born, have been like the rest of the Latino population in that they’re there, but we don’t notice. We talk about them, but we don’t talk to them.”
The FSHA graduate is a voice for our time; we look forward to following Sister Teresa in her leadership of the LCWR and beyond.
