Boarding Hall News

Greetings from Residential Life at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy!

The month of February in the boarding hall was spent exploring and celebrating our diverse cultures in a number of ways—keep reading to see what we've been up to.

We kicked off our month with a Super Bowl viewing party on February 4, complete with an array of snacks, and lots of excitement over the Justin Timberlake halftime show.

On February 6, our Associate Director, Ms. Collier spearheaded our intentional program on cultural identity; the night included sharing of her own cultural story, large group discussion about cultural stereotypes, and what girls wish other people knew about their cultural identities. This night shaped our culture-based activities for the remainder of the month.

On Saturday, February 10, we had our large group outing to Universal Studios—luckily for us, Universal was also celebrating Lunar New Year, so we were able to enjoy festivities during that outing as well. The next day, girls were invited to make traditional dumplings in Ms. Katie's apartment.

On Thursday, February 15, we celebrated Lunar New Year as a boarding hall. Before school on the 15th, the girls were invited to grab special snacks and candy to take to school, and they were left with little surprises in red envelopes on their doors. In these envelopes, the girls found certificates they could redeem for a school night off of the Hill. Mr. Lao came to the boarding hall in the afternoon to cook traditional Chinese food, and girls were allowed to go out to celebrate for the evening.

Our prayer service for February was completely student-run, and celebrated our diversity as well. The prayer service consisted of prayers being read in different languages, as well as a partner discussion on different proverbs found across varying cultures.

We ended our month with an "Around the World" birthday dinner, where each table represented a different country, and a hot pot afternoon on the 24th with Ms. Katie.

We’ve got a fun-filled March ahead of us, including a trip to Santa Barbara, and an overnight camping trip to Leo Carrillo State Beach.

As a gentle reminder, the boarding hall will be closed for spring break beginning at noon on Saturday, March 24. The halls will reopen on Sunday, April 8 at 10 a.m.

All Good Things,
Katie Steele
