FSHA students awarded STEM Research Grant funds

We are pleased to share that our students in Honors Scientific Research (aka “SciSearch”) have been awarded four Archer STEM Research Grants, which is a STEM initiative sponsored by the Archer School for Girls on the west side.  Over $20,000 was available through the merit-based application process; all of our girls who submitted proposals received funding, for a total of ~ $4300 awarded to FSHA. 
 
Please high-five the following students and ask them to describe their projects when you see them next –
 
Combating Antibiotic Resistance
Grace Lawlor and Ivian Zhang  -- “From Dental Plaque to Cystic Fibrosis: Tackling the Biofilm Problem through Quorum Sensing Inhibition”
Winnie Cai and Samantha Covey – “Quorum Sensing: What did one bacterium say to the other? ‘Let's glow together!’”
 
Deriving Transportation Fuel from Microalgae
Sophie Johnson and Julia Powers – “Fighting Carbon with Carbon: Effect of Carbon Supplementation and Reducing Agents on Growth and Lipid Productivity in Chlorella Sorokiniana”
Cynthia Ma and Amesie Noll – “Can Iron Make the Difference?  The Effect of Iron Supplementation on the Biomass Growth and Lipid Accumulation of Chlorella Sorokiniana”
 
They will conduct the experiments in the coming months and present their findings at various events in April and May.  Please join me in cheering them on this semester.
