Pasadena Native McKenzie Street Reflects on Royal Court Journey and Looks Forward to Her Future

Flintridge Sacred Heart senior McKenzie Street never thought she would become a member of the 2022 Royal Court, serving as an ambassador of the Tournament of Roses. Luckily, she did not have to wait very long during the finalist selection process to find out.

“I didn’t think I would be picked,” said Street. “I was happy to be called first so there was no suspense!”

Living in Pasadena her whole life, the Rose Bowl experience including the parade has been a staple of the family New Year’s Day tradition. She particularly loves being able to see the live marching bands and the elaborate and creative floats.

“We’ve gone to the parade every year. We wake up early and go to our particular spot to watch the floats,” said Street. “It is how we bring in the New Year.”

Since being picked, Street has soaked in the whole process of being a Court member. She enjoyed learning about the history of Pasadena as well as taking part in the media and leadership preparation that goes along with the position. Most of all she valued making an impact on the lives of others.

“Taking part in the clothing drive to assist those affected by domestic violence was very meaningful to me,” Street said. “Interacting with kids at schools and hospitals was my best experience. I love babysitting, so that helped me really engage with the kids”

She also enjoyed the close bond with her fellow members of the Rose Court. “It is a sisterhood,” Street said with a smile. “We became instant teammates and really help each other.”

Representing Flintridge Sacred Heart, a Catholic school in La Canada on the edge of Pasadena’s borders, Street met many alumnae and friends of the school who were happy to talk to her. She credits the all-girls environment for developing confidence in herself and the academic decathlon program with helping her with public speaking. Street said that the school taught her to “be bold and ask questions.”

While her current favorite subject in high school is Gender Studies, Street is looking into pursuing a major in Communications and Media with a minor in Computer Science. Her list of potential landing spots includes NYU, USC, Barnard College, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego and Tulane. No matter which institution she decides on, her Royal Court experience and the friends she made along the way will never be forgotten.
