Eric Wood stagecraft theatre teacher director

What do your students call you?

Mr. Wood, though when I started here I wasn't a teacher so there are still a few holdouts that call me Eric. They'll graduate soon.

What made you want to work at FSHA?

I have been helping on theater shows here on and off for close to 18 years. When the opportunity to come here on a more permanent basis showed itself, I jumped at the chance.

What has been your proudest professional accomplishment?

I have a new one almost every day. There's nothing like seeing a lightbulb go off over a kid's head for a new idea, a new realization or a new connection being made.

What has been your favorite teaching moment at FSHA?

When my class was doing a Question Formulation Technique exercise about how to build a disco ball at the moment Sister Celeste came in to observe.

What most excites you about your work here on the Hill?

I love to work with kids to make something that's never been made before.

What is FSHA's best kept secret?

ComedySportz! Seriously! Come see all of our shows!

What do you love about the all-girls environment at FSHA?

I love the freedom the girls have to express themselves without feeling the pressure of the presence of males judging them (I don't really count as a male in this case as their comfort level with my presence has basically turned me into a piece of furniture.)

What's your favorite spot on campus?

Right behind the theater where some days you can see the ocean.

When not in the classroom/office, where can you be found?

On foot, in transit.

What's your favorite place in the world?

Anywhere my (almost) 2-year-old daughter is.

What are you surprisingly good at?

I can sing.

Who has made the biggest impact on your life?

There are many, but none compare to my daughter, Eliza. It's cliché, but seeing the world from here perspective has had an amazingly positive effect on me.

What book, movie, work of art, piece of music, etc. can you not imagine life without?

The works of James Taylor. From comforting me in times of sadness to putting my baby to sleep at night, JT (the real JT) has always been there.

What did you want to be when you grew up (at age 12)?

A paramedic.

What do you want to be when you grow up (now)?

A forest ranger or a grizzly bear trainer.
