A Virtual Home Away From Home

Welcome back! While we are not able to return to our home-away-from-home at Flintridge Sacred Heart, we are safer together as a residential life family by staying apart, for now.

The Residential Life staff is planning for our students’ return; we have some new room furniture arriving soon, some fun and colorful paint to spruce up the halls, and decorating with the 2020-21 theme, “Pokemon!”

We are also planning a safe reopening for all in order for us to stay safe and healthy. We are meeting as a community several times each month in groups; new student, Boarding Council, and our full residential life family. The focus of our meetings will be orientation, teambuilding and leadership development under our new social-emotional learning curriculum.

Stay safe!

Running a residential life program in the time of Covid-19 requires a nimble mindset in shifting a close-knit, in-person boarding community to an online community. At Flintridge Sacred Heart, we have worked hard to sustain our community and outreach to all of our students and their parents, both at home and abroad.

Our entire residential community is involved in a variety of meetings and activities each month. Our Boarding Council meets several times a month to plan activities and explore various leadership models. Our favorite meeting is the all boarding, monthly birthday party where we participate in team building fun, hear from outside speakers and alumnae, and plan for virtual and reopening fun. We are hosting an all-school movie night on December 18, and several fun events in January such as cooking classes and gaming nights. Other groups that are meeting include service learning planning and volunteerism.

Our holiday party was a huge success! We gathered to celebrate the holidays and December birthdays, received virtual gifts from Santa, and enjoyed a dorm version of the famed poem, “The Night Before Christmas!”

We are making sure that our parents feel included in the community as well, and we will continue our monthly Zoom Parent Coffees and parent education seminars.

Above all, we are determined to focus on developing a sense of belonging for our girls. Our teachers and advisors regularly reach out to our residential students for academic support and check-ins. Every girl has received a residential life sweatshirt embodying our theme, “Pokemon.” As our sweatshirts say, “Why chase my tail when you can chase your dreams!” Our dream is to reunite as a full community when possible! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all, near and far.

Despite not having any resident students physically on campus, we have been busy using this time to reflect, plan and innovate in a purposeful and focused manner, and update handbooks, practices and procedures. The overall mission and vision of the residential program is to grow our girls as individuals, and to grow our residential program into a true community.
