Check out the changes coming to the 2019-20 school year

Dear Parents and Students,

We are very excited about this new school year and wanted to share a few changes that will be implemented!
  1. The daily schedule is changing.
    1. In response to student and adult community feedback, we are eliminating “office hours” at the end of each school day. Class and club meetings have been scheduled into the flex blocks each month and faculty members will be on campus for thirty minutes following dismissal each day for students who wish to meet.
    2. Announcements will no longer be at the beginning of each day. They will be incorporated into the second block to better accommodate the flow of the student day. As a result, the first bell will be at 7:55 am with second bell and first block class starting at 8:00 am. The second block will begin at 9:30, with announcements from 9:30 - 9:40 and class then continuing until 11:00. Break will go until 11:15 with the third block ending at lunch time, 12:40. Block four (first bell at 1:20) will begin at 1:25 and end at 2:45. School will be over at that time with teachers available and on campus until 3:15 to meet with students as needed. The overview is included below.
  2. With the new schedule the buses will be arriving at school at 7:45 in the morning and departing at 3:00 pm. The late bus will continue to depart at 5:40, Monday - Thursday. Late Start and Early Dismissal Days will adapt to the new schedule as well and be communicated directly to rider families.
  3. We are implementing a new cell phone, smart watch and earbud/headphone protocol. Noticing an increase in the usage of these devices during class, we have developed policies to help students stay focused during instructional time.
    1. Each classroom will have a collection basket for phones. Upon entering the room, any student with a phone will be directed to place it in that basket for the duration of class (or until given different direction by the classroom teacher) and then pick it up before leaving the room.
    2. Earbuds/headphones are not to be used on campus unless directed by a teacher in a specific class. They interfere with a student’s ability to hear and as such, are both a distraction and safety hazard.
    3. Smart watches are not allowed in a classroom at any time due to academic integrity issues that have developed around improper use during class.
    4. As in the past, any device being used inappropriately will be confiscated and turned into the Asst. Principal for Student Affairs. It will need to be picked up by a parent or a Residential Life Faculty member. Arrangements may be made for pick up after-office hours at the 24-hour security desk in the Main Building.
  4. The Flintridge Sacred Heart Uniform expanded towards the end of last year to include a daily uniform pants option. We are excited about these new pieces and remind you to please check the status of your current uniforms (length of skirts especially!). Updates and/or replacements, including the new pants options are available at CKW Uniform
  5. We’d like to remind families that the flex blocks are scheduled time with important content for our students including Research Project work, Health & Wellness curriculum, College Application work, Advising activities and work, Class & Club meetings, etc. Students who miss these blocks will find gaps in their preparedness for next steps in these areas. (This was a major problem last year with students calling parents to leave at the last minute.) Off-campus appointments should be scheduled after dismissal times on flex block days so that students are able to participate in whatever curriculum or event has been scheduled for that time.
We’re excited about the new schedule and less distractions from personal devices during class time. The new pants option was popular by the end of last year and we anticipate it being a great alternative for those inclement days of fall and winter! Enjoy these last days of summer and we look forward to seeing all of you!
