I am pleased to share the news with you all that Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has applied for provisional membership with roundsquare.org. Based in Windsor, England, the Round Square is a consortium of 220 like-minded schools in 50 countries on every continent. Founded by educational theorist Kurt Hahn, the founder of Gordunston School in Scotland, and the Outward Bound movement, his approach to experiential learning led to the founding of the Round Square movement. He is credited for the quote, “There is more to you than you know.” We have this same language on our website!
The Round Square organization is most noted for its approach to embedding character education, leadership development, service, experiential learning, democracy and internationalism in the school’s existing framework. These form the six IDEALS of the program. We as a school are already doing this in our teaching and learning; our values and mission statement embody the Round Square ethos and philosophy.
Chadwick and CATE are the only local Round School schools; Flintridge Sacred Heart would be the only Los Angeles Round Square school, a mark of distinction.
OPPORTUNITIES for our girls, faculty, staff and school:
International Conferences- The annual international conferences are powerful, 1200 student, international experiences in places such as Singapore, Hamburg, Ottawa, Indore, Cape Town; centered on themes such as Leadership, Inclusion, Climate change, and more, and featuring major speakers- Justin Trudeau, Winnie Mandela, explorers, change makers, and young leaders making and inspiring social change. The international conference is held over one week in the fall, and mandatory for all Round School schools (six students, 2 adults)
The next International Conference will be held in The United Kingdom in Fall 2021; designed for juniors and seniors.
Regional Conferences-These are conferences on a specific thread, a bit closer to home (leadership, adventure, Global Issues, etc.) Open to grades 9-12
International Service Trips- Students sign up for Christmas and summer trips on their own to complete extraordinary service projects under the Round Square guidance.
Student Exchanges-one way or two way exchanges for three or four weeks at a time to a Round Square school; primary objective is cultural immersion. Only cost to student participants is airfare and spending money.

King Constantine Award- Awarded annually to a girl who embodies the spirt of the six IDEALS.
Outcomes:
- Character and experiential education-risk taking, resilience, teamwork, empathy, problem solving, etc.
- Develop global competencies, cultural competencies, leadership, and empowerment
- Transformative experiences for students and adults alike
- Value added to the student experience at our school
- Round Square membership puts a stamp of excellence on the school.
- Fun!
We will be having our zoom evaluation visit on January 14-15. Once we are approved as provisional members, we can apply one year later for full global member status. We would receive our certificate and Round Square flag at the international conference before thousands of peers and King Constantine and Queen Anne, benefactors of the Round Square.
I hope this information gives some assurance that this membership is well worth it, and our girls’ worlds will open to amazing vistas and opportunities. Having worked at a Round Square school for four years prior to Flintridge sacred Heart, I witnessed first-hand the transformative growth in students.
