Varsity Basketball Begins Anew
The varsity basketball team plans to bounce from a 0-15 record last season, according to captain Michelle Martinez ’09.
“The program has become so organized and everyone has been working hard for months. I know we will be more competitive in league this year and hopefully bring back some wins,” she said.
New head coach Gino Pacella is changing things up in hopes of more triumphs.
“We wanted to change the mindset into something positive with more communication. I like that everyone’s responding and JV and varsity get along so well,” he said.
The team is already showing progress and recently dedicated a practice learning how to fall correctly on the mats and getting the foul.
“It was great. We drew three charges at the Flintridge Prep game and I don’t remember seeing one in the last four years,” said Pacella.
“I expect every game this season to be hard where we can learn something new every time,” he added.
Martinez thinks the team will come out of this season changed for the better: “This is the start of a great basketball team here.”
Returning to varsity along with Martinez are seniors Ashley Hildebrand and Megan Turner, juniors Amanda Erwin, Zeeyna Haddad and Stephanie Kiang, and sophomores Stephanie Ramsden and Vanessa Romero.
Joining to varsity are seniors Alissa Chan and Jill So, sophomore Olivia Warner and freshmen Ivy Fitzgerald and Natalie Janji.
New this year are the “tweeners.” Sophomores Laura Allen, Darby Halloran and Lauren Pantiskas are not only the captains of the JV basketball team, but also suit up for varsity tournaments.
The next game against Sacred Heart of Jesus is tonight at 5:30 in the SAC.
