Varsity Soccer Remains First in CIF Division II Rankings

After beating every team in the Mission League, the varsity soccer squad (13-3-2, 5-0) defended its first place ranking in Division II against Harvard-Westlake last night. While scores were not available at press time, everyone knew they could not take anything for granted.
“Each team in our league provides formidable opposition. We could just as easily still finish 4th and miss the playoffs as we could win league,” said Co-Coach Frank Pace.

The team has not only won but also has recorded shutouts against each team. Close 1-0 wins over its toughest opponents—the Chaminade Eagles and the Harvard-Westlake Wolverines — boosted the team’s morale in the first week of league play.

“Varsity has surpassed expectations to date,” said Pace. “If the season ended today it would be a great season, but the season doesn’t end today.”

Away games have not affected the girls’ ability to play. They traveled to face the Notre Dame Sherman Oaks Lady Knights and then the Alemany Warriors, winning both games 2-0 and 3-0, respectively.

Last week the Tologs hosted the Louisville Royals and won 3-0. The game marked the halfway point in the Mission League season.

“We’ve been doing extra fitness—running, stairs and sprints,” said co-captain Isabelle Johnson ’09. “It’s been both an individual and a team effort. We all work hard and help each other out.”

The team now wants to finish the second half of league with as much enthusiasm, focus and heart as they had in the first.

“We need to maintain our focus and make the most out of every practice and game opportunity,” Pace added.

Junior Varsity

The JV team (6-3–2, 1-3-1) had a successful start in preseason and looks to improve in league.
Sophomore Monique Lind leads the team’s scoring with eight goals, followed by freshman Caroline Treinen who has six.

“Everyone on this team works really hard day in and day out. Our biggest victory this season came with a win over Mission League powerhouse Harvard-Westlake,” said Coach Andrea Otero.

The squad traveled to face Chaminade on the 28th.
