Swim Prepares to Dive into Season

With two Mission League champion ships under its belt, the swim team is diving into the new season with the goal of winning league for a third time.

“It takes a team to win, but we have some very talented girls, such as captain Alex Marquez ’09, Madeline Talt ’10 and Brianna Swinney ’10,” said Coach Gary Appel.

Another fresh face is new assistant JV coach Malia Garcia.

“Malia is really nice and I am excited to see how she adds to our team and pushes us to do our best,” said Westhoff.

“We are looking forward to varsity and JV swim winning league, and I know we will see great things from divers Brittany Salas and Emily Boyd,” said Coach Appel.

The team believes that its hardest opponent to beat will be nemesis Harvard-Westlake.

“We are hoping for no injuries and being able to fill each event with three quality swimmers,” said Coach Appel.

“We’re just getting really pumped up for this season. Everyone is going in very positive and we’re working hard as a team to do our best and hopefully be league champs!” said Dobson.

The team is without graduates Lauren Matulich, Beth Strub and Sarah Zwart, as well as current students Hillary Kaiser ‘09 Andrea Kropp ’10, Maryellen Larkin ’09, Rachel McDonald ’09, Shaylyn Stanley ’10 and Ariel Williams ’09.

“Even though we lost some of our good swimmers last year, we got a lot of new ones too, and I hope we do just as good or even better than we did last year and win Mission League again,” said Westhoff.
