Undeafeated Softball Team Loses Protest
I don’t want to jinx it,” Coach Kirk Nishiyama said superstitiously. He scrawled 12 on a scrap of paper and pointed to the number. Declining to enunciate the tally, he said, “...but that’s how many games we’ve won in a row so far.” The tally now stands at 14 games.
Varsity softball ranks No. 1 in Mission League with a 4-0 record. They
beat their toughest competition, Alemany, in a 4-3, but the game did
not count.
When the Tologs played Alemany at the Glendale Sports Complex on April 2, the opposition complained the distance from the pitcher’s mound to home plate was too far, which the umpires confirmed before the game.
The pitcher’s mound was 43 feet away from home plate, but regulation distance for high school teams is 40 feet. Alemany claimed they had the right to protest. When they ultimately lost to Flintridge for the first time ever, they followed through on the complaint.
The athletic directors and coaches of both teams as well as the Mission League principals convened last Friday to discuss the long list of complaints Alemany had against FSHA.
“There wasn’t an unfair advantage. We found out about the distance the same time they did. We played on the exact same mound as they did. We play on that same field every year. They’ve beaten us there before,” said Coach Nish.
Ultimately, Alemany won their protest. The Tologs and the Warriors will replay the game on a date yet to be determined.
However, the Tologs do face Alemany today at Rocky Peak at 3:30 p.m. in the second of the two league games scheduled for the season.
“We are not too worried about playing Alemany again because it gives us the opportunity to beat them three times this year,” said co-captain Jessica Ferri ‘09.
The Tologs beat Harvard-Westlake 2-0 on Tuesday. The score stood at 0-0 until the bottom of the 7th inning, when Lauren Torres ‘12 hit a walk-off two-run homer.
The team has shown remarkable improvement over prior seasons.
“Our fundamentals, execution and confidence have really improved, especially our confidence. Our seniors have shown tremendous leadership,” said Coach Nish.
