Speech & Debate Team Competes Well at Invitational

Five members of FSHA’s debate team competed in the Annual California Invitational Speech & Debate Tournament held on the UC Berkeley campus over the Presidents Day weekend, and held their own against over 2,000 competitors from across the United States.

In the Junior Varsity section for Lincoln Douglas debaters, Tara Kawai-Daniels broke into the top 16, called Octofinals, and was the 11th place speaker in the competition, earning her two trophies.

Monica Amestoy also earned a trophy when she broke into the elimination rounds of the Double Octofinals, while Jenna Gulick just missed the elimination round by a handful of points.

“I must admit that we didn’t expect our freshmen Tara and Monica to break into elimination rounds. All the girls are true novices and they competed against JV students that included some juniors. This is only their third Lincoln Douglas tournament,” said debate coach Leilani McHugh.

Aly Lopez and Bella Cremer also worked hard in the Open field event in their respective categories of Dramatic Interpretation and Impromptu Speaking.
