ComedySportz May Shut Down

The ComedySportz high school league is in jeopardy of closing because the professional ComedySportz Theater in Hollywood, which funds the coaches for the high school teams, is closing after 22 years as the longest running show in Los Angeles.
After losing corporate support due to the poor economy, ComedySportz Theater has struggled for two years to stay in business. Corporate donations made up half of the theater’s income.

“It’s devastating, especially for the newer high school members. The close of the theater means that the high school league will be over,” said league founder and longtime FSHA coach James Bailey (pictured).

As shocking as it is for the high school players, the close of the theater means the loss of income for all of the professional members who perform at the Hollywood Theater.

“I really feel bad for Mr. Bailey — ComedySportz is his whole life. He has worked so hard to make it what it is today, and we all love ComedySportz so much,” said captain Becky Wilcox ’11.

If the theater closes, Mr. Bailey will lose his ComedySportz license and will no longer be able to coach the FSHA team, which means that the Tologs will no longer be registered to play.

“I really don’t want ComedySportz to end. I wish it could stay open for just one more year so that I could be on the team as a senior,” said junior Bella Cremer.

The only way to prevent the theater from closing is to raise enough money to greatly reduce the budget deficit. Two-thirds of all of the students in the ComedySportz high school league have to raise at least $360 each to stop the theater from closing.

The team is planning on having a 24-hour “improvathon,” an idea that has not yet been approved, but the plan is to raise money from sponsors who will donate for every hour of improvisation. The entire team will be at school for a full 24 hours on a to-be-determined date taking turns playing all of the ComedySportz games. Each member needs to have enough sponsors to raise $20 for each hour during the improvathon.

“It sounds like a lot of fun. By 2:00 in the morning we are all going to be so tired, but I think that will just make the improvising a lot funnier!” said new player Nichola Marick ’13.

If the improvathon succeeds, it is hoped the other schools in the league will be encouraged to have their own fundraisers. If enough money is raised by Oct. 24, the theater can be saved. —Lauren Donnelly
