Desmond to Run for Disabled Vets
Mrs. Kathy Desmond, academic dean at FSHA, will participate in the upcoming half-Ironman in Oceanside to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF).
The organization supports aspiring athletes who have been disabled by birth defect or injury. The CAF's Operation Rebound specifically helps current and former members of the military, police officers and firefighters who were harmed in the line of duty. Many have debilitating injuries, including the loss of limbs, but come back with the help of devices and prosthetics to run marathons and participate in various sports.
CAF will introduce veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts who have benefited from Operation Rebound at the 2011 Rohto Ironman 70.3 California on April 3 in Oceanside. Mrs. Desmond — who will participate in the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run with her brother Michael — will donate money raised by sponsors to Operation Rebound.
This is not Mrs. Desmond's first race — among others, she participated in last year's Boston Marathon. This upcoming Ironman will be her first fundraising race.
