New Detention Policy Drops Infraction Count
The dreaded detention list is no longer on morning announcements. Assistant Principal Mrs. Rosemary Johnston, who is in charge of detention this year, said “privacy is very important to me, so rather than announcing names, students are contacted through their fshamail accounts.”
Students who receive three or more tardies, three or more parking notices within a 30-day period, or who exhibit imprudent behavior will serve detention, which is now based on the Dominican pillar of service.
Service can include working in the garden, helping with bulk mailings in the development office, tearing down a theater set or “other outreach projects that come up,” said Mrs. Johnston.
Detention is usually scheduled on Wednesdays for an hour to avoid conflicts with sports. Only a few students so far have received detention, which is arranged about once a month.
Uniform infractions are not part of the detention equation. Rather, Mrs. Johnston calls in students who are out of uniform and has a private conversation. The separation of uniform violations from other infractions is the reason behind the decrease in the number of students on the detention list, concluded Mrs. Johnston. -Rachel Koo
