Pandas Get TLC on Mountain in China
If you were given the chance to work with pandas for an entire week, would you jump at the opportunity? Two boarding students, sophomores Jia Gu and Serena Rao, did more than jump when they elected to spend seven days up in the mountains of China with pandas that just “eat and sleep, eat and sleep.”
They gained service hours for their volunteer work, which involved taking care of an adult panda, which they brushed, fed and petted.
The girls chose the Rustic Pathways panda conservation project because it is one of the leading panda institutes in the Sichuan province. Out of the 64 pandas on the mountain, the girls saw 15 to 20 scattered around the preserve.
The volunteers stayed at a motel, which in their opinion wasn’t the best place to live but they felt the experience was worth it. In their free time the girls played cards every night and hiked around the mountain during the day where they also saw many waterfalls. —Alejandra Gurrola
