FSHA Library Launches Calming Corner & Overhauls Nonfiction Room
We are excited to announce the completion of a major reorganization of the library’s back room.
Allison Clay, director of counseling and psychological services at FSHA, collaborated with librarians Nora Murphy and April Younglove to launch the Calming Corner, a space for students to find life inspiration and relaxation. In the right hand corner of the library’s back room, students will find: journals as templates/references, coloring books for relaxation, board games, teen advice books, humor and odd fact books, and nostalgic children’s books. Students can often be seen on breaks or after school doing puzzles and using coloring books. Chess has proved to be especially popular, and our girls now frequently challenge one another to games.
As part of the Calming Corner’s mission to help FSHA girls de-stress, the library is now hosting monthly lunch events called CRAFT OFF every Third Thursday. Students are invited to make a craft together and then vote on the best craft of the day. The winner receives a $5 gift certificate to Starbucks. September’s kick-off CRAFT OFF event was making monster books (like from Harry Potter!). It was well attended and received overwhelming positive feedback from students. Our next CRAFT OFF will be on October 26th.
The nonfiction collection in the back room of the library has also undergone a much-needed face-lift. There are no more handwritten labels on book spines, and books with outdated information have been moved to archives or donated. Over the summer, all our nonfiction volumes were rearranged so that they are now in order from 000-999, and the Oversized collection and Teaching collection have moved to the left side of the shelves along the right wall. The library is grateful to the many parent volunteers who have pitched in hours to help make these changes possible. Our volunteers even helped us locate over 356 items missing books last year!
If you haven’t looked in our back room in a while, come on by and challenge a friend to a game in our Calming Corner, or checkout that nonfiction book you’ve been thinking of reading!
