September News from the Boarding Hall

It’s hard to believe that we’re nearing the end of September and that your daughters have been on the Hill for seven weeks now. We’ve had a lot going on over the past month; keep reading to hear what we’ve been up to.

From Sept. 9-10, we held an orientation to the greater LA area for all new boarding students. This weekend of fun included a walking tour of downtown LA exploring the rich history and beginnings of the City of Angels. We followed up our tour with lunch at Grand Central Market, where the girls were able to enjoy their choice of unique foods from different restaurants in the Los Angeles area. We ended our day with hangout time at Lake Hollywood Park and caught great views of the Hollywood sign.
On Wednesday, Sept. 20, we had our first boarding hall birthday celebration, and celebrated our August and September birthdays with a beach-themed dinner. Despite the less than terrific weather, we still managed to have a water balloon fight with over 800 water balloons.

This past Saturday, a small group of girls went on an outing to Riley’s Apple Farm. We picked apples for the morning, ate some authentic fall food, and then ended our outing with a stop for ice cream on the way home.

This weekend, we’ll be having our annual boarding hall retreat. We’ll be spending time together bonding by exploring the meaning of community, doing small and large group discussion, and playing some campus-wide games as a boarding hall family.

Along with our bigger events, life day to day in the halls has been very lively. We’ve had several community dinners since the start of the school year, and the girls have been enjoying our weekly movie nights on Thursday. Other highlights include study time and ice cream with Ms. Hansen on the weekend, an afternoon of tie-dye on Sept. 3, a study café with Ms. Collier on Monday nights, a hot pot night with Ms. Katie on Aug. 26, game nights with Ms. Sam, and impromptu outing with Ms. Melissa and Ms. Anoosh to Montrose last weekend.

Coming up in October, we have an outing to Universal Studios for Halloween Horror Nights on Oct. 13, a prayer service on Oct. 24, and an intentional program focused on healthy relationships on Oct. 26. We’ll be celebrating our October birthdays with a fall-themed dinner on Oct. 18, and we’ll continue to have daily activities to encourage the girls to get involved.
