November news from the boarding hall

October was a busy month in the boarding hall, full of all things autumn! Read below to see what we've been up to...

We kicked off October with our first-ever leadership retreat in Lake Arrowhead with the boarding council. The weekend consisted of bonding time, team building initiatives, and explored the theme of "everyday leadership." This retreat has been part of the larger school-wide strategic plan to build a leadership component into the residential life curriculum and was a huge success.
On Friday, October 13, we went on our annual outing to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. Other fun outings and activities for the month included a baking Sunday with me on October 15 and trip to the pumpkin patch on Saturday, October 21.

We had our October birthday celebration on the 20th; a Halloween-themed bash that included a costume contest, mummy race, and a donut-on-a string eating competition within the students' dorm families.

On October 23, we held our monthly intentional program which was workshop on how to have productive conversations in light of conflict. Residential life staff modeled the tenants of reflective listening to students, and students were given the opportunity to practice conversation in pairs. The next day, we held our October prayer service that allowed students to focus on their own gifts and talents, and affirm one another.

We ended our month with a Halloween celebration at Ms. Hunnewell's (an English teacher at the high school) house that included dinner and trick-or-treating. It was a really fun evening, and many of the girls loved being able to get off the Hill and be in a home-like environment for the evening.

We've got a lot of fun planned for November, including a camping trip to Malibu this weekend, and an outing to the movies on November 12. As a gentle reminder, the boarding hall will be closed from Saturday, November 18 at noon, until 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 26. School resumes after Thanksgiving break on Monday, November 27.
