Dr. Karla Callejas, Ed.D.

Social Studies Department Chair & Teacher
Co-Moderator for the Black Student Union (BSU)
Started 2019
When I was 12, I thought I would grow up to be a costume designer for the stage and screen. I have always loved history, and at the time, I loved learning about the history of fashion.

What is your role at Flintridge Sacred Heart?

Social Studies Department Chair & Teacher

What do your students call you?

Students call me Dr. Callejas or Dr. C.

What made you want to work at Flintridge Sacred Heart?

The day I interviewed for the position, I was asked to do a 30-minute teaching demonstration. The students who sat in on my lesson were so welcoming and eager to learn! It was at this moment that I knew I wanted to work at Flintridge Sacred Heart.

What has been your proudest professional accomplishment?

My proudest professional accomplishment thus far was completing my doctoral dissertation while teaching full time (at a high school), teaching part-time (at a university), and while adjusting to parenthood! Our daughter was 2 years old when I graduated with a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California.

What do you love about the all-girls environment at Flintridge Sacred Heart?

My favorite moments on campus thus far have been in the classroom. Our students are thoughtful, studious, and dedicated. Most importantly, they are empowered young women who love to engage in class discussion. I love working in an environment that encourages young women to use their voice, and to construct knowledge together - in the true spirit of "veritas."

What is your favorite spot on campus?

There are so many to choose from! The campus offers spectacular views of the San Gabriel Valley. I also marvel at the architecture of the administration building; I always feel like I am stepping back in time whenever I set foot in what used to be the old Flintridge hotel lobby.

What did you want to be when you grew up (at age 12)?

When I was 12, I thought I would grow up to be a costume designer for the stage and screen. I have always loved history, and at the time, I loved learning about the history of fashion.

What do you want to be when you grow up (now)?

I have been teaching history at the secondary and post-secondary level for 16 years, and do not see myself doing anything else.
